Kelly Slater

Kelly Slater is an American professional surfer, most commonly known for being crowned World Surf League champion a record 11 times, and therefore widely regarded as the greatest professional surfer of all time.

Slater grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, he began surfing at age 5. By 10 years old he was winning events up and down the Atlantic coast and in 1984 he won his first age-division United States championship title. After turning professional in 1990, Slater struggled during his first two years on the professional tour and placed 43rd in the world rankings both years.

In 1992 he secured podium finishes in three of his first five events before winning his professional tour event, the Rip Curl Pro, in France. That same year, he won’t the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii and secured his first world title and at age 20 he became the youngest surfing world champion ever.
