Charlie Sheen first came to light in 1986 offering a breakthrough performance in Platoon, the Vietnam War film that won the Oscar for best picture. In summer of 1990, Sheen left Santa Monica rehab centre where he spent almost a month but said he would “continue attending 12-step meetings”.

Sheen initially checked himself into the rehab centre for treatment for alcohol addiction, that same year his engagement to actress Kelly Preston had ended after reports she had been accidentally shot in the arm in their home.

In 1996 Sheen is taken into custody and charged with the assault of former girlfriend Brittany Ashland, and again in May 1998 Sheens father persuades him back into rehab after a near fatal overdose.

Later that month, Sheen is ordered back into rehab after being pulled over by police in LA.

Forward to January of 2006, Sheen and second wife Denise Richards announce they are divorcing, during their bitter custody dispute she claims physical and verbal abuse, as well as death threats against her.

December 2009 Sheen is arrested and booked on suspicion of second-degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief in a DV dispute with his wife, Brooke Mueller. February of 2010 Sheen checks himself into rehab as a “preventative measure”, months later in August of 2010 he pleads guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and is ordered to spend 30 days in rehab as part of a plea deal.

January of 2011 Charlie Sheen is taken from his home on a stretcher and hospitalised. Fast forward, over three years Sheen continues to experience a whirlwind of events, criminal charges and rehab discussions, to November 17 2015 stating “I am here to admit that I am, in fact, HIV positive”.

This became icing on the cake for the many rehab attempts, allegations and charges including both physical and verbal abuse, and all of the criminal mischief in between.
